But much of this magic is done by the Retrospect Client. I need to minimise network traffic using all the lovely techniques that Retrospect uses, such as link compression, backing up identical files once (and then only creating links to this for subsequent copies), and backing up only the differences between versions of edited files rather than the whole thing each time. However, my Backup Server is off site with a reasonably slow link. Now, shares on the TS-219P can be accessed directly from the Retrospect Backup Server. But I can't think of any other way Windows XP could be involved as stated on the compatibility page. I don't want to have to leave a Windows machine running just to be a Retrospect Client proxy for a TS-219P folder share. i.e., the Retrospect Client runs on the Windows XP box as usual, but a Network Drive has been mapped to a folder share on the TS-219P, and it is this Network Drive which is set up as a Restrospect Volume via the Windows XP machine. The implication is that EMC Retrospect will back up a TS-219P, but only if the folder to be backed up happens to be accessed via another machine running Windows XP SP2. In the '3rd Party Software' compatibility page which I have since found here it says that EMC Retrospect 7.6 is compatible in a 'Windows XP SP2' environment. When trying to run the RetrospectClient binary after installation, I get an error message.
#RETROSPECT CLIENT FOR WINDOWS 10 INSTALL#
I assumed that I could install the Retrospect Linux Client on the TS-219P and thereafter I could back it up like any other Retrospect Client machine. Compatibility with it is one of the reasons we bought the TS-219P. Acronis True Image, CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup, EMC Retrospect, Symantec Backup Exec, and LaCie Silverkeeper.' We have been using EMC Retrospect for a long time and have found it to be an excellent product. It clear states on the product page here, that 'The NAS works well with other backup software, e.g. However, one area I am unclear about is compatibility with the EMC Retrospect backup client. I really like much of the built in functionality and I've also been able to add some of my own, turning it into an OpenVPN server.

I am extremely pleased with how it works.
